Top 7 Interior Design Trends to Get Ahead of in 2023

It looks like 2023 is going to shape up to be an interesting year. As more and more of us return to offices, embrace new careers, and adapt to the new normal of hybrid work flexibility, our homes will have to evolve around us.

And these are some of the trends that we’re expecting to take center stage in 2023.

Maximalism Is Gaining a Foothold

For years now, minimalism has been the overarching trend not only in interior design but in design in general.

The problem with minimalist design is that it reduces everything to the ridiculous. It attempts to take all of the definition and personality out of whatever it is that’s being designed - whether that be a coffee table or a traffic pedestal.

Maximalism is the exact opposite, and we’re proud that the trend is growing. In maximalist design, the details that define a “thing” are celebrated, whatever it is.

Maximalist designs celebrate detail, color, history, and heritage - and we’re here for it.

Black, White, and Neutrals Are Fading: Color Is Coming in

Just like minimalism has been a cornerstone of interior design for a long time now, so too have faded and washed-out neutrals. Blacks, whites, and slate grays have dominated interior design palettes around the country for years.

Yet, like minimalism, these are boring and utterly lack personality. Bright colors are making a comeback, not only in the form of decor but in prevailing color schemes in paint, stone, wallpaper - you name it.

Keep in mind also that even warm earth tones, despite the fact that they are sort of neutral, are widely compatible with a bright assortment of colors, and much, much warmer than gray, black, and white.

The Fusion of Trends

To be specific, we mean that mixing elements of design from different eras is what we’re going for here. In 2023, we expect this evolution to become a cornerstone moving forward.

If you’re a person that is dedicated to a specific era, such as the colonial era or the Art Nouveau era, the good news is you may be able to embrace some flexibility going forward. It’s going to become more normal to bring about the interplay of design elements from different times in history or from different schools of design.

In fact, this is another nod to maximalism. People are complex creatures with diverse backgrounds, and no one is one-dimensional. Therefore, this new design trend will enable decorators to embrace elements from different places in the world and points in time.

Fortunately, this trend is also going to make incorporating heirloom furnishings into most interiors even easier.

Sustainable Furnishings Are Growing in Popularity

This one’s been growing in popularity and it’s not going anywhere soon. Sure, there are some synthetics that can be recycled and are not particularly environmentally harmful - but natural materials are making a soaring comeback, specifically sustainable natural materials.

Think materials like stone (see below), bamboo, natural woods (generally those that grow fast and are sustainable), and for you industrialists, even concrete and metals like steel.

And yes - don’t forget that materials like aluminum and steel are actually sustainable, even if they don’t look “natural.” They can easily be produced and recycled.

The era of “single-use” synthetic furnishing has fallen by the wayside, and the era of sustainable furnishings is taking over.

Say Goodbye to Basic, Boring Kitchens

Just like washed-out neutral interiors and maxed-out-minimalism, the era of boring, basic, white, empty kitchens is going to fade - at least we expect it to.

Say no more to the flat, plain, neutral countertops, white tile, and stark, brushed stainless fixtures. Get ready to welcome wrought iron, and industrial fittings, and to make the most of your negative space with furnishings and decorative elements that reflect your interests, your family’s history, or your heritage. Allow baskets and decorative curiosities to take over your countertops!

Colors and materials will evolve here, too. Get ready to see more kitchens suffused with warm earth tones, rich greens, and deep burgundies, as well as kitchens making the most of exposed statement stone (see below) and wood.

By the way, piggybacking on this trend is something similar: we also expect laundry rooms to get a makeover in the coming year, too, with brighter colors and decorative elements.

Welcome the Era of Statement Stone

Whether or not marble and granite will fade in popularity is anyone’s guess. For our part, we say no. But we also predict that statement stone is going to do nothing short of experience remarkable growth in popularity.

So what is statement stone? Think about stones like soapstone, marble, basalt, and unfinished granite, all of which are available in a wide range of colors, from white to black and with everything in between.

This can be used to finish walls, pave floors and paths, create countertops, and so much more, and their rough, unfinished look creates a grounded, down-to-earth atmosphere that is in touch with nature.

The Open Concept Needs to Become the “Flexible Concept”

Finally, after three years of “pandemic” living, most of us are ready to get back to entertaining. There’s a catch, though as open-concept living areas, for many of us, still have to accommodate children, home offices, and much more.

So you can expect the open concept to evolve into the “flexible concept.” Don’t expect it to disappear overnight, but expect it to transform.

For our part, we offer a wide range of 3-panel room dividers that are perfect for creating hybrid living, sleeping, and entertaining spaces - or for whatever purpose you need.

And, many of our 3-panel room dividers are made with rice paper and natural wood, both of which are natural materials that can be sustainably produced - keeping in line with one of our other pointers.

An Emphasis on Natural Light

                  3-panel room dividers

What can we say about natural light, other than that it helps your body synthesize vitamin D, aligns your circadian rhythm, and can even uplift the mood?

Oh, how about the fact that it’s free for everyone to take, day in and day out? Electricity is not!

So, whether for cost savings or for health benefits, expect designs that take greater advantage of natural light to grow.
